For the Holidays I was successful in making our front door wreath and after scouring Pinterest I knew I wanted to recycle our current one and make a new one for Spring/Summer.
Our current wreath looked like this - and yes it was still on our front door...I justified it by saying it was close to Mardi Gras colors so it worked.
I usually buy my craft stuff at Hobby Lobby or Michael's but I was at Wal-Mart the other day and came across these gorgeous fabrics. I am currently obsessed with gray and yellow (we just changed our guest bath to these fab colors) so I thought it would be the perfect color palette for the wreath. They come in 24 long slices (2.5in X 42in) and in various prints. The price was $9.99 which I thought was a pretty decent deal. I also justified the cost by telling myself that I already had the wreath. Hobby Lobby has these spools as well, and I am pretty sure they are priced the same and you can usually get them on sale.
After purchasing the spool and learning how to make the fabric rosettes awhile back my creative mind started spinning. I turned on Lifetime Movie Network, got the hot glue gun and camera out and got crafty!
Here are the steps I took to make the rosettes:
Choose one slice of fabric
Fold in half TWICE
To make the center of the rosette roll the fabric tightly - once you get to a desired thickness use your hot glue gun to hold together
To start the "rose" part take the outer part of the fabric and fold it towards you. It kind of makes a triangle. I never do these perfectly, I tend to let the fabric do what it wants.
It was also difficult to photograph this step...
Give a little distance between each fold and every couple folds add another drop of glue.
Once you get to a desired size
cut the remaining fabric to where you have a piece like this left over
then simply fold the piece back behind and secure with glue
Here is how a few of mine turned out. The larger one used the whole entire slice of fabric and the smaller one used half
I knew I wanted to add something else to the wreath - I forgot that I had purchased this wooden "C" from Hobby Lobby a couple months ago. I also had some primer and yellow spray paint from another project that I did.
While I was waiting for the paint to dry I started to lay out all of my rosettes on my wreath before I glued them down.
After playing around with where I wanted them to go I went ahead and hot glued them down. I thought using the hot glue was going to be an issue and not work but it work out very nicely (even though I dripped hot glue on myself a few times). After all of my rosettes were secured I did end up making 2 or 3 smaller ones to fill in some gaps that were present.
I initially wanted to hang the "C" in the middle of the wreath with a bow on top but after playing around with it I realized our peep hole was going to be covered and I did not want that. I also could not get the "C" to hang like I wanted.
I ended up still using the bow, used a little bit of hot glue to secure the "C" to the side of the wreath and then used clear fishing line to secure the bottom. I actually only used the decorations and fishing line to create the holiday wreath so I had a spool already on hand. I am much happier with this look than the previous one.
In the end since I had most of the materials used the whole wreath cost me no more than $15
